The Gay Vegans

Poverty in LA

I love Los Angeles. Just over one year living here and I am so happy we made the move.

My main reason that I love it hear is access to the beach and surf. So many options. Our favorite spot has become Zuma Beach in Malibu, an hour form where we live.

I also the the weather, living in the vegan capital of the world, the diversity (at any one time in the sauna at my gym there are at least three conversations going on in different languages), and the almost magical feel of living here.

The reality for many, though, is different. From a skid row that is the size of many small towns, to one in five kids in LA County living in poverty and so many people here working two or three jobs just to survive or to give their kids a better chance, I don’t forget that in the midst of an amazing life for me live so many who have so little.

My activism is not neatly placed inside of a little box. It reaches out to many communities, to pretty much any living being suffering or experiencing injustice.

As I suggest places to visit and experience in LA, I’d also like to let you know that if you’re in a position to support groups doing amazing work for those living in poverty in LA, please check out:

Downtown Dog Rescue

Downtown Women’s Shelter

Definitely check out these two amazing organizations and get a better feel for all of LA.
