The Gay Vegans

Loving animals – a 24 year vegan

I decided to go vegan because of my love for animals and my desire to do as least harm as possible to them. I made that decision 24 years ago. I’ve never looked back.

The world sure has changed in regards to veganism in the past 24 years. From ice cream to cookbooks, we are pretty close to mainstream. In my very small town we have two ice cream places that offer delish vegan ice cream, for example. If you’re not already vegan, it’s a great time to give it a try. Especially if you love animals.

More and more people are going vegan. Some for the animals, some for the environment and some for their health. My experience with veganism is that those who choose to go vegan for the animals, for the same reasons I went vegan, tend to remain vegan. The decision is deeply personal and deeply related to their love for all living beings.

For many years I would tell people that I loved animals while I included animals in my meals. Once I looked at what I was eating and decided it didn’t match my values or my love for animals, it was super easy to go vegan. I was no longer harming animals to please my palate.

It continues to be super easy. There will always be excuses, like for the love of cheese or cannot go veganĀ  because of their health, but those are simply excuses. I do acknowledge that for a very small amount of people it is difficult to be vegan health wise, and even many of those people have been able to stay vegan.

If you love animals, give veganism a chance. Your food choices do not have to include the torture of animals, the suffering of animals or creating so much fear for animals. There are resources all over the internet to support you, and you have us!
